January 2006

Jessie is back to his old self. We still don’t know why he had a seizure Wednesday night.

We’ll probably never know the real cause. The important thing now is that he’s feeling better.

Below Jessie is jumping for a treat in the kitchen. Because of the tile floor it kinda looks like he’s tall and able to stand on his hind legs, but he’s jumping.

When I saw the eStarling Wi-Fi LCD frame I was pretty impressed. Just hang it on a wall and point it to a Flickr RSS feed and it dynamically displays the pics in a looping slideshow. You can also email photos to it. The problem is the frame is only 4×6 and oh yea, it’s $250.00 plus shipping and tax. Well worth it I’m sure, but man that’s a lot of money that I don’t have. What I do have is an old IBM thinkpad, so today I went about converting this thinkpad into a WiFi Flickr picture frame.

This picture was taken as I was hanging the frame. This was post fingerprint wipedown.

The thinkpad is an ancient 600 that took me a few hours to get working enough to boot.

Once I got it booted up I found that it was running Windows ME. I tried to upgrade the OS to Windows 2000 but since the laptop only has 16mb of RAM the upgrade was a no go. I know Linux is all tech sweet but I don’t have time for a Linux crash course.

First I located and removed all the screws in the LCD display casing

Then I removed the casing and the hinges that held it in place.

I then flipped the display onto the back of the laptop and clipped away some of the casing to give me a little more slack.

Once I got the display lined up how I wanted it I secured it to the case with brackets I made from modified expansion bus covers. This was because I wanted the display secure but easily movable incase I needed to make adjustments later.

I installed an application called FlickrScreensaver . This application will let you do a lot of what the eSterling does. You can point it at a Flickr set, group, user, or tag and it will download and display these pictures in a slideshow.

I don’t have a built in wireless NIC, so I ordered one from CDW for $23.00

Finally I ran some medium gauge wire ($1.50) through some carefully drilled holes in the casing of the laptop and secured it to a wall. Make sure you find a stud if you do this.

Last I hung an 8X10 ($6) frame over the whole thing.

I was happy about how the project turned out. With a total cost of $30.50 plus tax it was a pretty sweet deal.

If I had money, which I don’t, I would buy this. “The eStarling frame is a standalone Wi-Fi LCD photo frame that connects to a wireless network and automatically displays photos e-mailed to it in a slideshow format. Additionally you can specify an RSS photo feed from Flickr based on your own tagged keywords.”

I work in NASCAR, (now I guess I kinda work for NASCAR) so I can’t say much about this.

Flickr user “Answer this…” has compiled a set of NASCAR wives and girlfriends for your browsing pleasure. The pictures speak volumes

And for the ladies, he has posted a drivers set.

I think I know that guy from somewhere, can’t put my finger on it though.
